I chose to interview an Strings music teacher for Elizabeth High School. Elizabeth like many other schools are constantly intergrating new technology into the classroom. And the music classrooms are not absent to the phenomenon.
The strings at Elizabeth High School was very aware of this change in adding technology to the classroom but had no idea of what it was called. The NETS-T(National Educational Technology Standards for Teachers) was an unknown name until mentioned it. The teacher was familiar with the concept and the idea of adding technology to the music classroom is beginning to shape the way he/she teaches. These new technologies, such as iPads, iMac computers, Photography Studios, and SmartBoards, are shaping the way they teach.
The teacher uses the iPad and iMac computers to teach the students the basics on how to use Garage Band. They have done many projects with recording the class rehearsals and recording the classess performances. The SmartBoard is used in his/her classroom to connect to other classrooms around the world and to access YouTube with it's unlimited videos at a click. The only problem with the technology is that the students sometimes feel that they don't need to know how to play an instrument to make music is a big mistake for students to believe. Everything in music production is build off of the fundamentals of music and without the fundamentals the student can only go but so far until they hit a wall.
Sulaiman, you are right. It is very important to utilize technologies that support the learning of music, not just using ones for the sake of using technology.
