Music Technology is a very important subject in highschool and college classroom. I find that hands-on experience is the best teaching tool when it come to technology. For my classroom I would like for my students to just jump in to the technology of Garage Band and ProTools recording software. These technologies are standard for all musicians to know. They are easy to work with and easy to learn.
I would like for my students to use a combination of traditional classical music and popular music to get a full understanding of what these programs can do. Recording and editing audio is a big portion of what these programs do, so I think it is imperative that the students spend a lot of time working on these two skills. Editing audio can be a very fun and enjoy able process to creating music. After the students learn the basics of editing through my personal instruction and YouTube clips they will be given audion to edit in the most creative way possible. This allows the students to test out what they have learned and further grasp the concept of editing audio. Next, they will edit some more audio but with some guidelines. The guidelines are: every student must edit the new piece of music in a way the compliments another style of music, such as Rock, Pop, R&B, etc. They can also add any recorded audio track and MIDI instrument to complete their idea. This will create interest in the project at hand and allow the students to be creative in their approach to the music.
The student judged by their concrete explaination of their project and not by the creativity of their music.
